Dare County Wins 1st round in state

Dare County as the Area 1 tournament champion was the home team in the opening round matchup vs Havelock. The state tournament is being played at MS Deal Stadium in Lenoir, NC. The starting pitcher for Dare County was Taylor Featherstone.

Dare County fell behind in the top of the first inning 3-0 due to defensive blunders in the infield. Pitcher Taylor Featherstone weathered the bad defensive play and continued to attack hitters. The Dare Couty Hammerheads battled back in the game offensively making the game 6-5 in favor of Havelock going into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Havelock’s pitcher struggled in the bottom of the 6th as Dare County loaded the bases with no outs. Dare County managed to score one run to tie the game at 6-6 with two outs in the bottom of the 6th still with bases loaded and Mike Allen at the plate. With two strikes dare County’s Mike Allen delivers a huge single to center field. Havelock’ center fielder misplayed the ball letting the ball go under his glove allowing 3 runs to score. The four run 6th inning allowed Dare County to take the lead 9-6.

Going into the bottom of the 7th Dare County’s pitcher Taylor Featherstone was relieved after the first two runners got on base. Relief pitcher Mike Allen came into the game. Havelock loaded the bases with no outs. Dare County’s pitcher Mike Allen did not let the pressure break his composure. He limited Havelock to only scoring 1 run in the top of the 7th.

Dare County wins in thrilling fashion 9-7 to advance to the second round played Saturday at 6pm.
